The Clean Truck Check program aims to lower even further emissions from diesel vehicles that operate in California. This program, formerly known as the Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance Program, targets heavy-duty vehicles like trucks and buses, ensuring they’re running clean and efficiently.
One key difference is that the Clean Truck Check regulations apply to all trucks operating in the state, not just trucks based in California.

Recreational Vehicles
All Recreational Vehicles registered in Califorina are as of Jan 2025 to pass a Clean Truck Check prior to registration.

Heavy Duty Diesel
All HD Diesel trucks as of Jan 2025 are required to pass 2 Clean Truck Check per year, jumping to 4 per year in 2027.

Hybred Vehicles
All hybred vehicles as of Jan 2025 are required to pass 2 Clean Truck Check per year, jumping to 4 per year in 2027.

Buses
All diesel buses as of Jan 2025 are required to pass 2 Clean Truck Check per year, jumping to 4 per year in 2027.

Non-Gasoline Vehiles Over 14,000 Lbs
All non gasoline/electric hybred vehicles over 14,000 lbs as of Jan 2025 are required to pass 2 Clean Truck Check per year, jumping to 4 per year in 2027.

What is Clean Truck Check?
It is a regulation to test heavy-duty vehicles’ emissions control systems for proper operation. Clean Truck Check applies to nearly all diesel and alternative fuel heavy-duty vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 14,000 pounds that operate on California public roads. This includes both in-state and out-of-state vehicles, as well as public vehicles (federal, state, and local government); motorcoaches; transit, shuttle and school buses; hybrid vehicles; commercial vehicles; personal vehicles; California registered motorhomes; single vehicle fleets; and vehicles registered outside of California (not including motorhomes).
What happens if I don’t comply with the CARB regulations?

Has Enforcement Started for Clean Truck Check?
Clean Truck Check began in January 2023 with the use of roadside emissions monitoring devices (REMD) to screen for vehicles that may have high emissions. Vehicles flagged as potential high emitters will receive a Notice to Submit to Testing (NST) from California Air Resources Board (CARB) enforcement to ensure the vehicle is operating with properly functioning emissions control systems.
